In-Memory Databases and Business Intelligence: Our partnership with Altibase

For today’s enterprise businesses, 100% database uptime is essential. When a database or server goes down unexpectedly, the consequences go much further than monetary losses and can extend to their brand reputation—which could be disastrous. IT departments of corporations need to adopt technology solutions that are proven to eliminate downtime and data loss while improving system performance.

Having worked in the business intelligence (BI), database, and data warehousing industry for over 15 years, in-memory technology is undoubtedly the most substantial technology innovation in the relational database market. In the past few years, it has become an overused buzz term, and the meaningful innovation gets lost in the subtext.

As an enabling technology, a fully relational in-memory database provides an important part of what Gartner refers to as the Logical Data Warehouse, where Hadoop and other data persistence layers work in concert with common tools and metadata to enable a true Big Data environment.

An in-memory database is a DBMS that primarily relies on RAM-based storage. Contrasted with systems that employ a hard-disk storage mechanisms, in-memory databases are logarithmically faster, since the internal optimization algorithms are simpler and execute fewer CPU instructions. Accessing data in memory eliminates seek time when querying the data, which provides faster and more predictable performance than disk.

That’s why I am excited about our new partnership with Altibase. The partnership between Altibase and MicroStrategy births a high performance BI environment that enables information to be available and accessible to users in real-time. Altibase's Hybrid In-Memory Database has a unique architecture that takes full advantage of the blazing speed of RAM and the security of disk in a single unified engine.

Coupled with the MicroStrategy Analytics Platform™, users can get enterprise-grade analytics delivered in real time, with zero latency and 100% uptime. Organizations now have the opportunity to monitor activity as it occurs and respond proactively, as well as reduce reporting time from weeks to days or even hours. Further, data marts can be allocated to the in-memory side of Altibase’s database for real-time BI while other areas of the data warehouse can be allocated to the physical disk side of Altibase’s database. ALTIBASE HDB’s true hybrid architecture permits highly customized workloads for different Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

ALTIBASE HDB is a hybrid in-memory database for extremely fast data processing. It provides enterprises with both speed and storage volume, combining an in-memory with an on-disk database in a single unified engine. So what does that really mean? Today’s data needs extreme speed and large storage capacity. As such, to tackle the most wide-array of use cases, a database should be easy to use (SQL standards compliant, supports all common interfaces, requires minimal application programming for implementation, DBA’s can learn it in less than a day, etc.) and should be able to process data quickly (in-RAM processing) and store large data sets (HDD), all in a single system.

Strategic data management and analysis is crucial to revenue growth, cost reduction, and overall increased profitably. Altibase's Hybrid In-Memory Database puts to rest many concerns that organizations may have pertaining to their databases' strict data consistency, high availability, scalability, low latency, or any combination thereof. That is why ALTIBASE HDB was the database of choice for in-memory database technology in the U.S. by Bloomberg Tradebook’s Boomerang trading product.

Altibase is recognized as a worldwide leader for this particular hybrid technology. Like MicroStrategy, Altibase has been around for over 20 years, providing database solutions for large enterprise clients including Samsung, LG and E-Trade. Their certified database backend can be used with MicroStrategy seamlessly. Their goal is to be able to create a special configuration option to allow certain data to be in-memory, allowing clients to utilize in-memory table spaces to perform real-time analytics with the MicroStrategy platform. You can find out more about Altibase on their website or our partner page.
