By 2020, IDC predicts that the total amount of digital data created worldwide will equal 44 zettabytes. But by 2025, that will rise to 180 zettabytes. With statistics like this predicting a data deluge, big data analytics is now on the minds of more and more enterprise executives determined to stay afloat in a churning sea of disruption.
Big data analytics solutions are becoming key to digital transformation efforts, where those able to collect and analyze vast amounts of structured and unstructured data are increasingly discovering and delivering on new business models - and transforming the customer experience - faster than the competition.
In Dresner Advisory Services’ latest Dresner Wisdom of Crowds® Big Data Market Study, big data adoption among respondents surpassed 50% for the first time, a giant leap from 2015 when adoption stood at just 17%.
Among the 36% of non-users that said they’re planning for future big data adoption, 28% said they’re looking at 2018. Yet more than half said those plans reach beyond this year, potentially putting them in a laggard’s position with the 11% in the survey that said they had no plans at all to use big data.
When it comes to ranking the importance of technologies and initiatives strategic to business intelligence, big data ranks 20 out of 33 topical areas in being seen as critical or very important. Reporting, dashboard and advanced visualization were deemed the top three critical or very important technologies, with big data lying closer to the less mainstream, leading-edge trends like IoT, edge computing and video analytics which rounded out the bottom three.
In the ranking of big data use cases, data warehouse optimization, customer/social analysis and predictive maintenance topped the list for critical or very important, with IoT once again appearing at the bottom of the list, though one might guess this won’t be for long.
