Your Data-Driven Guide to the World Cup

GOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!! In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past two weeks, we are now well into the Group Stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. As with all things sports, it seemed only natural to us to dig into the data and see if we couldn’t unearth something interesting. Keep reading to check out our World Cup dossier, which will be updated to include the latest results and statistics throughout the tournament.

Whether you’re a lifelong soccer nut (in which case you likely refer to it as football—but hey, we’re not all perfect), a casual fan, or just scratching your head as you flip through channels looking for the US game, this dossier has something for everyone. It looks at key statistics for each and every match in the World Cup—a great resource to increase the quality of your water cooler discussions and social media hot takes.

Everybody knows that Argentina has disappointed thus far, but did you know that Belgium has had only one more scoring attempt than Argentina in two games (38 versus 37), but has netted seven more goals? This dossier contains all that information and a lot more, and should provide even the biggest fan with some data-driven entertainment. Click on the image below or access the dossier here.

The dossier is interactive and updates every five minutes with the latest data, so be sure to check back throughout the tournament. Special thanks to Matthew Pepper and James Sutcliffe,  who built this dossier using MicroStrategy on AWS.
