Michael Jordan on the Court: What the Data Tells Us

Without live sports during Covid-19, ESPN’s Michael Jordan documentary series, The Last Dance, has captivated myself and others missing out on live sports. Airing over ten parts, the series chronicles the career of Michael Jordan through the lens of his final season.

There doesn’t seem to be much debate around whether or not Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time; however, watching the series has inspired me to take a closer look at his career through the numbers. To get started, I found regular season and playoff stats for Michael Jordan and some other players to build a dossier to compare them.

With MicroStrategy 2020’s new free form dossier canvas, I was able to overlay many visualizations to build this tool to compare the careers and specific seasons of NBA players across different generations.

While the numbers alone don’t tell the whole story of his greatness, it’s apparent when looking at how much of the scoring Michael took on for the Bulls in the 1990s compared to some other lauded playoff runs like LeBron James and the Cavaliers in 2016.

Download and view the full dossier to take a look for yourself. Thank you to ESPN for airing The Last Dance and Basketball-Reference for supplying the NBA player stats. Want to create your own dossier? Download MicroStrategy desktop today.
