These keys and devices are critical for developing a better understanding of infrastructure and operations across an organization. The data generated by employees can be aggregated, analyzed, and used to make informed business decisions that boost productivity and upgrade security.

In a recent Gartner report, Operationalize an Instrumented Workplace With Analytics to Support Digital Business, analysts Manjunath Bhat and Chris Silva dive in to the use of enterprise IoT, analytics, and mobility to show how infrastructure and operations leaders can harness today’s technology and devices to address real-world business challenges.

They explore such cases as how a single device can control access to systems, both physical and logical, replacing the myriad of corporate accessories required by infrastructure and operations departments and advocates. They also explore how these devices are being used to measure and improve asset and space utilization, engagement levels, and productivity metrics.

These same devices are proving useful on the customer side, as well. One example referenced in Gartner’s report is Disney’s MagicBand, a wearable bracelet that allows theme park visitors to have a convenient, secure experience transacting across the property. MagicBands are hotel room keys, admission tickets, and a means of purchasing food and merchandise – and just like the transactional accessories you wear at work, they’re generating valuable data to improve experiences and engagement.

This report also references our Enterprise IoT solution Usher which is an example of a digital badge that enables contextual authentication with physical assets and supports analysis across physical and digital resources. The difference in Usher is that it’s not part of a wearable band or a card attached to a belt or lanyard, but delivered by a device that employees carry already – their smartphone.

“As traditional businesses have adopted a digital business strategy, the boundaries between the physical and the digital worlds have collapsed,” notes Gartner’s report. BYOD for workplace IoT authentication and analytics? It makes perfect sense for digital business.
