MicroStrategy highly recommends that customers upgrade to the latest Platform Release (MicroStrategy 2021) and corresponding quarterly Updates. Platform Releases will go out to our entire customer base and will be supported for three years after release, with patches and a regular update cycle to address defects. Platform Release updates will occur every three months.

A Platform Release is built for broad customer adoption. We will make regular stability patches and quarterly updates to each Platform Release, and new features and functionality will be added to client and tools updates as MicroStrategy continues to innovate. MicroStrategy highly recommends that customers upgrade to the latest Platform Release and corresponding update because this will ensure that customers are on the most reliable, most secure, and highest performing release available.
For the past three years, feature releases were published every three months and supported for six months afterwards. However, to ensure that customers no longer need to follow a six-month release cycle for the latest features and updates, we are now including new features in Platform Release Updates instead of feature releases. New Client & Tools features with minimal server dependency are being introduced every quarter. Platform Release Updates are also introduced every three months, but they are supported for the same amount of time as the Platform Release, giving customers more flexibility with upgrades.
They are similar. The Platform Release Updates include server updates, which are similar to hotfixes, but new clients and tools are also made available in these quarterly releases.
Yes! For example, the MicroStrategy Workstation client from the MicroStrategy 2019 Update 1 is backwards compatible with MicroStrategy 2019 server components.
No, they are not. At a minimum, MicroStrategy clients and tools are expected to be on the same update as the MicroStrategy server-side components.
All customers with current maintenance plans are eligible to upgrade to equivalent products in the latest version. These products are available for download to customers with valid MicroStrategy Support Site accounts.
Migration planning and implementation services are available through MicroStrategy Consulting and can be requested through your Account Manager. Customers looking to upgrade from a version that was released more than two years prior to the newest version should enlist MicroStrategy Consulting to help guide them through the process.
