MicroStrategy Data Mining Services

MicroStrategy Data Mining Services is a fully integrated component of the MicroStrategy BI platform that delivers the results of predictive models to all users in familiar, highly formatted, and interactive reports and documents.

Using MicroStrategy Data Mining Services, business users, report designers and analysts alike can view and build predictive reports using MicroStrategy and distribute these reports to all relevant decision makers and stakeholders. These reports can also be included in analytically-rich dynamic enterprise dashboards, which provide unique data mining insight at-a-glance.

MicroStrategy Data Mining Services allows organizations to use predictive functions that are natively available within MicroStrategy, or import models from third-party data mining vendors. Business users can access highly-formatted, data-rich, predictive reports through all the user interfaces supported by the MicroStrategy BI platform, as well as perform standard report manipulations and create new reports on the fly. Unlike other similar products, MicroStrategy Data Mining Services hides the complexity of the underlying statistics and does not require users to adapt to new applications or interfaces. Instead, it delivers sophisticated results to the touch points already used by MicroStrategy users, including MicroStrategy Web, MicroStrategy Mobile, Dashboards, Excel, and PowerPoint. In addition, Data Mining Services extends the reach of traditional data mining insight by incorporating the scoring process on-demand in a single BI platform.

Data Mining

An example of an out-of-the-box MicroStrategy data mining function is the multiple regression model, which supports linear, logarithmic and exponential regression between several independent variables and a dependent variable. This allows business users to create and view richly formatted reports with forecasted numbers. The PMML for this new predictive metric is automatically generated by MicroStrategy and can be exported and used in other data mining tools for further tuning and analysis after which it can be imported back into MicroStrategy.

Support for Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML)

A key innovation that enables the integration of data mining models with other applications is the automatic conversion of a predictive model stored in Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) into an algorithm that is used by a metric in MicroStrategy. PMML is an XML standard that represents data mining models developed and trained by data mining tools. This industry standard was developed by the Data Mining Group (DMG), an independent group of over two dozen leading technology companies, including MicroStrategy. PMML supports a number of different data mining algorithms and incorporates data transformation and descriptive statistics. PMML is generated by nearly all data mining tools from companies such as SAS®, SPSS®, Microsoft®, Oracle®, IBM®, KXEN™, ANGOSS and others. MicroStrategy is the first BI platform to support the PMML standard and, by allowing predictive metrics to be accessible by all users in the enterprise, data mining for the masses is now possible.

Rich, Flexible Analytic Library

MicroStrategy contains a library of more than 300+ basic, OLAP, mathematical, comparison, financial, data mining, and statistical functions that can be used to create business metrics and key performance indicators. Companies can use these types of advanced analytics to develop complex statistical calculations, more effective forecasting metrics, and many different forecast models for the same metric.

Other capabilities such as set analysis to determine relationships between data elements, and transformations to include time series analysis can be used in conjunction with the function library to provide rich insight without the need for a specialized third-party data-mining tool. In addition, MicroStrategy's Function plug-in provides additional flexibility, enabling access to functions that are not part of MicroStrategy's standard analytic library.
