Flexible Technology for Departmental to Enterprise BI
Seamless Migration from Departmental to Enterprise BI
MicroStrategy 9
- Metadata and Data Layer Decoupled: MicroStrategy’s metadata abstraction layer allows companies to “re-point” the metadata to automatically access new data locations without disrupting reports or requiring redesign.
- Consolidate Disparate Departmental BI Applications: MicroStrategy’s metadata compatibility enables departments to incrementally migrate business logic into a consolidated BI environment. MicroStrategy Object Manager helps consolidate disparate departmental BI applications by reconciling overlaps and conflicts.
OBIEE Plus
- Hard to Re-Point Multi-Metadata BI Environments: OBIEE Plus products, Oracle BI Publisher, Oracle BI Server, and the Hyperion products all have independent metadata repositories, making it extremely difficult to migrate from a departmental to enterprise BI environment.
- Limited Tools to Consolidate Disparate Departmental BI Applications: OBIEE Plus provides limited tools for migration management and conflict resolution. These tools cannot easily merge and reconcile metadata objects from separate products.

High Performance Multi-Source Data Access
MicroStrategy 9
- Seamless Navigation Across Multiple Data Sources: MicroStrategy’s unified multi-dimensional business model allows companies to create a single logical view spanning multiple data sources, making it easy to add any new data sources. Users are able to seamlessly drill across multiple data sources.
- Smart Push-Down Architecture: MicroStrategy performs joins at the database layer, minimizing network traffic and leveraging the power of modern database engines. MicroStrategy further minimizes network traffic by moving the least amount of data to the most optimal database to query.
OBIEE Plus
- Slow Performance for Multi-Database Access: Oracle BI Server multi-database technology does not support joins at the database layer and does not move the least amount of data to the most optimal database. Oracle recommends that customers avoid multi-database joins whenever possible due to associated performance implications.
- No Smart Push-Down Architecture: The Oracle BI Server does not provide optimized retrieval of multi-source data as it cannot select the best data source to query. The Oracle BI Server does not provide smart push-down technology, so must pull all data to the middle tier for further analysis.

Rapid Departmental BI Application Development
MicroStrategy 9
- No Need for an ETL Tool or Data Warehouse: MicroStrategy 9 provides easy access to multiple data sources without requiring a data warehouse. MicroStrategy can instantiate in-memory ROLAP cubes with data from multiple sources, obviating the need for an ETL tool or a data warehouse.
- Graphical Architect and Automatic Data Detection: MicroStrategy’s graphical design interface makes it fast and easy to add new data sources and define business logic. MicroStrategy automatically detects data types from data sources and creates the entire business logic layer, speeding development.
OBIEE Plus
- ETL Tool and Data Warehouse Dependency: Oracle BI Server does not provide a reliable high performance multi-source engine and cannot instantiate in-memory ROLAP cubes, so an additional ETL or data warehouse layer is necessary to access data from multiple sources.
- Limited Graphical Architect and Data Detection: OBIEE Plus provides a limited graphical design interface. Oracle BI Interactive Dashboards do not include any pre-created dashboard templates for rapid dashboard creation. OBIEE Plus does not provide an intuitive scripting interface, forcing project developers to perform massive and repetitive tasks.
Centralized and De-Centralized Administration
MicroStrategy 9
- Flexible De-Centralized Administration: MicroStrategy enables web-based distribution of user and application administration responsibilities within departments. This offloads administrative tasks from centralized IT personnel and offers departments their own databases, metadata and BI applications within the same infrastructure as the enterprise BI environment.
- Synchronized BI Departmental Applications: MicroStrategy 9 Update Packages can automatically consolidate disparate development teams’ updates and changes.
OBIEE Plus
- Limited Centralized View of the BI Environment: OBIEE Plus provides a range of tools with multiple metadatas and administration tools. Oracle BI Publisher, Oracle BI Server and Oracle BI Presentation Services Server all have separate and different administrative interfaces.
- Limited Administration of Departmental BI Applications: OBIEE Plus does not have a metadata and data integrity-checking tool and does not support update packages to allow cross-product development.
