Deep Insight through Superior Analytics

Flexible and Powerful OLAP Interactivity

MicroStrategy 9

  • Automatic Drill Anywhere: Users can seamlessly drill anywhere for boundary-free investigative analysis, regardless if the data is in one or multiple data sources.
  • Complex On-The-Fly Calculations and Groupings: Users create new derived metrics, derived attribute element groups, filters, and subtotals created on-the-fly using existing metrics and attributes in the report. This functionality makes it possible for users to perform new calculations, custom groupings, and filtering directly on the report.

Microsoft

  • Lack of Automatic Drill Anywhere: Microsoft does not have automatic drill anywhere capabilities across reports. All drill paths across cubes and across reports have to be manually pre-defined by IT or report developers.
  • Limited End User Analysis: Microsoft offers limited abilities for end users to conduct ad hoc analysis such as subtotaling on-the-fly outside of working within an Excel 2007 spreadsheet. Analysis often requires query re-runs, which slows analysis time.

Efficiently Answer Complex Questions

MicroStrategy 9

  • Iterative Multi-pass SQL Capabilities: MicroStrategy’s ability to generate multi-pass SQL allows it to answer analytical questions that require several steps and cannot be answered with a single SQL query block.
  • Dynamic Report Personalization: MicroStrategy’s analysis objects can be defined with a high degree of complexity. For example, a custom group can be based on a mix of metric qualifications and multiple attributes at different levels. The reusability of these analysis objects allows business users to answer sophisticated questions without requiring IT coding and promotes more efficient application development.

Microsoft

  • Limited Multi-pass SQL Capabilities: Microsoft does not generate multi-pass SQL query blocks and instead requires IT professionals to spend significant time hard coding. Therefore, Microsoft BI cannot answer complex questions in an efficient way by leveraging the database and analytical engine in the middle-tier when appropriate and in an iterative way.
  • Lack of Report Object Reuse Results in High IT Effort: Microsoft requires IT programmers to define most of the report logic in the Report Definition Language and offers limited abilities to reuse the report logic.

Sophisticated Predictive Analytics

MicroStrategy 9

  • Import Predictive Models: MicroStrategy Data Mining Services enables organizations to maximize their investment in data mining products by importing their Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) and seamlessly encapsulating the model as a predictive metric for use with any report or document.
  • Dynamic Report Personalization: Report designers and analysts can view and build predictive analytics using MicroStrategy and then distribute these into dashboards and reports to end users such as all relevant decision makers and stakeholders.

Microsoft

  • Market Lagging: Microsoft offers fewer predictive analysis models. For example, Microsoft does not offer a Vector Machine model — a learning system and one of the standard tools for data mining.
  • Not Fully Integrated: Microsoft requires users to download and install a data mining Plug-in. The data mining plug-in only applies to the desktop application Excel 2007. This contrasts with MicroStrategy’s fully available data mining that is available from any point in the platform and does not require its own download.
  • Hard to Use: Microsoft makes data mining tedious for the end users. For example, Microsoft requires Excel users to manually check each column to turn off filters before running a report.
