Deep Insight through Superior Analytics
Flexible and Powerful OLAP Interactivity
MicroStrategy 9
- Automatic Drill Anywhere: Users can seamlessly drill anywhere for boundary-free investigative analysis, regardless if the data is in one or multiple data sources.
- Complex On-The-Fly Calculations and Groupings: Users create new derived metrics, derived attribute element groups, filters, and subtotals created on-the-fly using existing metrics and attributes in the report. This functionality makes it possible for users to perform new calculations, custom groupings, and filtering directly on the report.
SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1
- Lack of Automatic Drill Anywhere: BO does not have automatic drill anywhere capabilities across reports. All drill paths across cubes and across reports have to be manually defined by IT or report developers.
- Two Overlapping Interfaces, Two Different MOLAP Strategies: Unlike MicroStrategy, BO requires two different products to perform similar ad-hoc and OLAP tasks: WebIntelligence for relational data sources and Voyager for multidimensional data sources.

Efficiently Answer Complex Questions
MicroStrategy 9
- Iterative Multi-pass SQL Capabilities: MicroStrategy’s ability to generate multi-pass SQL allows it to answer analytical questions that require several steps and cannot be answered with a single SQL query block.
- Compound Banded Reporting: MicroStrategy’s analysis objects can be defined with a high degree of complexity. For example, a custom group can be based on a mix of metric qualifications and multiple attributes at different levels. The reusability of these analysis objects allows business users to answer sophisticated questions without requiring IT coding and promotes more efficient application development.
SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1
- Limited Multi-pass SQL Capabilities: BO does not dynamically generate multi-pass SQL. Therefore it cannot answer complex questions in an efficient way by leveraging the database and analytical engine in the middle-tier when appropriate and in an iterative way.
- Inadequate Compound Banded Reporting: During competitive sale cycles, BO has been found to be unable to perform reports that necessitated many distinct layers of custom groups or grouping bands dictated by comprehensive formulas.

Sophisticated Predictive Analytics
MicroStrategy 9
- Import Predictive Models: MicroStrategy Data Mining Services enables organizations to maximize their investment in data mining products by importing their Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) and seamlessly encapsulating the model as a predictive metric for use with any report or document.
- Predictive Analytics for All Users: Report designers and analysts can view and build predictive analytics using MicroStrategy and then distribute these into dashboards and reports to end users such as all relevant decision makers and stakeholders.
SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1
- Insufficient Predictive Analytics: BO does not offer data mining and sophisticated predictive analytic capabilities across the product set. BO is unable to import PMML models, across the product set, from other data mining vendors for the purpose of creating predictive analytics and combining them with other metrics and reuse them across reports.
