Delivering More BI with Less Effort

Self-Service Web Interface

MicroStrategy 9

  • Fully Interactive Web Interface: A wide range of controls gives business users the ability to manipulate, format and analyze any report without IT support. Individual columns can be selected quickly and drill, pivot and perform tasks on the fly.
  • WYSIWYG Design and Edit of any Report at Runtime: Business users create and edit highly formatted reports using a zero-footprint WYSIWYG design paradigm that drastically shortens report development time.

SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1

  • Limited Interactivity for End Users: Web user interactivity differs widely between multiple BO products and even within WebIntelligence ”report panels”. HTML and ASP versions lack key functionality, providing only limited filtering, sorting, pivoting, subtotaling and formatting.
  • No WYSIWYG Report Design at Runtime: Crystal Reports is an IT-centric desktop design environment. Most formatting is limited to the desktop by IT administrators. Crystal Reports Web users are limited to static viewing with limited report sorting and filtering.

Dynamic Enterprise Dashboards

MicroStrategy 9

  • Fully Integrated Dashboards: Dashboards are created using all reports and objects from MicroStrategy’s single metadata. Intelligence Server provides sophisticated processing, security, caching, and analytical capabilities.
  • Highly Interactive Dynamic Dashboards: Dashboards provide high interactivity via selectors, controls, OLAP enabled grids and graphs, multiple layers of analysis, automatic multi-panel filtering and advanced visualizations.
  • Single and Pixel-Perfect Design Environment: Flash and DHTML dashboards are designed once using a single Pixel-Perfect, zero-footprint Web interface.

SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1

  • Two Dashboards Offerings: BO currently sells two separate but overlapping dashboarding products — BO Dashboard Builder and Crystal Xcelsius — forcing users to choose between the interactivity of Xcelsius or the relative scalability of Dashboard Builder.
  • Limited Interactivity: Neither Dashboard Builder nor Crystal Xcelsius supports key interactivity features such as automatic drill anywhere and multiple levels of analysis and Xcelsius users cannot pivot data. Other BO content is not accessible; BO Universes are not accessible to Crystal Xcelsius, Dashboard Builder cannot access Voyager content.

Rapid Comprehension of Data through Advanced Visualizations

MicroStrategy 9

  • Out-of-the-box Library of Advanced Visualizations: A comprehensive library of fully integrated advanced visualizations is provided for complex data analysis.
  • Highly Interactive Visualizations: All visualizations have drilling capabilities and enable users to select data elements that filter out other areas of the dashboard.
  • Extensible and Customizable Library: MicroStrategy customers can extend the advanced visualizations library by importing 3rd party visualizations. Advanced dashboard designers can edit or create their own visualizations or widgets.

SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1

  • No Consistent Use of Visualizations across the product set: Visualization capabilities vary widely by tool from limited visualizations in WebIntelligance, and Crystal Reports to some stand-alone capability via the Crystal Xcelsius, Polestar, and VizServer tools which cant be leveraged from other interfaces.
  • No Consistent Use of Charting across the product set: Charting capabilities vary widely by tool with the Voyager tool lacking support for many key chart types.

Robust Enterprise Reporting

MicroStrategy 9

  • Real-Time WYSIWYG Report Design: Highly formatted documents are built using WYSIWYG report design and formatting over a zero-footprint Web interface.
  • Comprehensive Report Styles: Users can choose from a wide variety of report styles, from horizontal and vertical banded reports such as invoices and statements, to zone-based reports such as dashboards and scorecards.

SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1

  • No Real-Time WYSIWYG Report Design: Crystal Reports does not offer web users a way to edit and format the report layout while viewing it, for a real-time WYSIWYG view of their changes. This increases the design time due to unnecessary iterations and design frustration.
  • Analysis OR Reporting but not both: WebIntelligence and Polestar analysis and ad-hoc query cannot be easily incorporated into formatted reports. Highly formatted Crystal Reports do not support interactive drill anywhere for additional dynamic analysis.

Information Delivery and Proactive Notification

MicroStrategy 9

  • Personalized Report Bursting: A single report definition can burst personalized information to thousands of users, saving processing resources.
  • Delivery of all Report Styles from a Unified Platform: Users can subscribe themselves or co-workers to receive all reports available in the MicroStrategy environment on a wide range of output devices.

SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1

  • Limited Dynamic Distribution Lists: BO has very limited dynamic distribution list capabilities across the prodcut set. Therefore, Administrators have to define fixed distribution lists and cannot use conditions to dynamically conform the recipient list.
  • Non-integrated User Interface for Defining Alerts: BO lacks a consistent approach to alerts with some tools, such as Crystal Xcelsius and Dashboard Builder providing only very limited alerting capability.

Seamless Microsoft Office Integration

MicroStrategy 9

  • Create New and Edit Reports In Microsoft Office: MicroStrategy delivers the complete reporting and analysis environment to Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook users. Users are able to access or edit existing reports or create new ones from within Microsoft Office applications.
  • Formatting Persists After Data Updates: Microsoft Office formatting changes and logic created within Excel files are saved and preserved after automatic data updates.

SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1

  • Limited Parameterization in Microsoft Office: BO’s Microsoft Office plug-ins offer limited prompting functionality. For example, Live Office does not support the ability to prompt on the set of metrics and attributes to incorporate in the report, also referred to as column prompts.
  • Inconsistent Access to BO content and data sources: BO’s Live Office cannot connect to SAP BW InfoCubes.
