Decision Support Data Warehouse

A Decision Support Data Warehouse system enables knowledge workers to make strategic and tactical business decisions based on factual data stored in a business intelligence data warehouse. Decision support systems must allow users to intuitively, quickly, and flexibly manipulate data using familiar terms, in order to provide analytical insight.

Decision Support Data Warehouses are implementations of an informational database used to store sharable data sourced from an operational database-of-record. They are typically a subject database that allows users to tap into a company's vast store of operational data to track business trends, facilitate forecasting and data mining, respond to data patterns, aid planning efforts, and measure performance against strategic goals—all with the goal of aiding and supporting decision making.

Beyond Decision Support

The ultimate goal of any decision support data warehouse system is to improve corporate performance by providing decision makers with better information. Thus, relative success of any decision support system increases as more departments and users within the organization have access to relevant information to make better day-to-day decisions.

MicroStrategy business intelligence software achieves this vision by delivering a unified business intelligence platform that provides:

  • Ease of use and self-service. MicroStrategy is the only BI platform to support all the users in the enterprise—from the most sophisticated analyst to the most novice report user—with a single web interface. Using all of the familiar user paradigms from Microsoft® Windows applications, users can create and format their own analyses, reports, scorecards, and dashboards with minimum IT involvement.
  • Highest user and data scalability. MicroStrategy offers a highly scalable BI architecture, which includes:
    • multi-threading to optimize the use of multiple processors in a single server (scale-in),
    • out-of-the-box server clustering (scale-out), and
    • full 64-bit support to leverage the virtually unlimited addressable memory available on 64-bit operating systems.
  • Access to all data across the enterprise. MicroStrategy uses multiple processing units or “engines” to access all data across the enterprise including relational databases, cube databases, flat files, and many operational databases. These engines generate highly optimized, database-specific SQL and MDX to resolve any query with the highest performance.
  • Seamless integration with existing applications. The MicroStrategy BI platform is an open platform built upon open standards that allows developers to integrate business intelligence into existing applications. As a result, any user within an organization can seamlessly benefit from timely and relevant information to make better decisions.
