LEXIS-NEXIS Meets Customers’ Growing Need for Information with NCR Data Warehouse Solution
Customer-Centric Warehouse to Help LEXIS-NEXIS Tailor Products, Service Offerings
Dayton, Ohio – January 19, 1999 - LEXIS®-NEXIS®, a leading provider of information services to more than 1.6 million users worldwide, will harness the power of a data warehouse solution from NCR Corporation to better serve its increasingly information-hungry customer base. The $1.1 million NCR Teradata®-based data warehouse solution – which includes MicroStrategy’s DSS Suite™ – will enable LEXIS-NEXIS to more fully understand how its products and services are used, how best to optimize them, and how to improve customer retention and growth. Along with helping to evaluate and shape customer service and business strategies, LEXIS-NEXIS will employ NCR’s Teradata data warehouse engine to strengthen and improve relationships between its sales force and its customers.
"The NEXIS sales force can more easily and effectively get their job done by accessing critical customer and sales data on their own because the NCR data warehouse is designed for ease of use," said Keith Hawk, vice president of sales for the NEXIS division of LEXIS-NEXIS. "With this new system, a sales team can extract the truly necessary information so it knows exactly what the customers require to achieve both short and long-term goals. Also, the information can be loaded, updated and retrieved quickly and reliably for instant results and feedback to customers."
Better Service, Better Support
About 400 sales and business people at LEXIS-NEXIS will access the NCR data warehouse solution using MicroStrategy’s decision support software, to get daily and weekly information on its customer base. This means employees have current and new information readily available to them.
For example, if a contract is close to expiring or if a customer has called customer service for extra service, the sales person can be quickly alerted. LEXIS-NEXIS is currently evaluating MicroStrategy’s DSS Broadcaster™, the industry’s first Information Broadcast Server, so that pertinent customer information can be distributed to several output devices, including e-mail, pager and mobile phones. The LEXIS-NEXIS personnel also will be able to easily access critical business information using DSS Web™, a user-friendly web-enabled interface. MicroStrategy’s decision support technology is highly optimized for use with a NCR Teradata-based data warehouse.
"Data warehousing and the extension of customer relationship management applications are critical elements for business success models today and into the future," said Mark Hurd, senior vice president of NCR Corporation. "NCR is at the forefront of this technology, providing effective solutions for customers like LEXIS-NEXIS. With our proven expertise in creating customer-centric data warehouse solutions, LEXIS-NEXIS will be able to better leverage its customer database to heighten quality service and support to its information-driven customers."
Y2K-compliant and Up-and-Running in Less than 90 Days
LEXIS-NEXIS required a data warehouse that was scalable and Y2K-compliant. NCR, as a recognized world leader in highly scalable data warehousing solutions, was able to get the system up and running successfully in less than 90 days.
"We demanded Y2K (Year 2000) compliance, as well as the ability to leverage newly-available, detailed customer information," said Pam Dunsky, senior director of Enterprise Information Systems at LEXIS-NEXIS. "Our partnership with NCR is an aggressive replacement rather than a remediation approach. With the successful installation of our new NCR data warehouse solution, we are moving ahead without delay or downtime. We are taking the reporting system and building it as a customer-centric warehouse for analyzing critical customer information to understand and predict customers’ needs better and address them more effectively for long term success and continued growth."
The NCR solution consists of NCR’s Teradata parallel database running on a 2-node Y2K-certified NCR WorldMark™ 4700 server. MicroStrategy provides the suite of business intelligence tools.
In addition, NCR’s Professional Services handled the installation of the new reporting system and has been assisting with quickly and successfully transferring all data from the previous system. LEXIS-NEXIS can continue its customer billing without interruption and, at the same time, query the data to track and analyze customer usage patterns.
Meeting Deadlines
LEXIS-NEXIS had originally planned to utilize existing technology – but eight months later and behind schedule – the technology clearly would not scale sufficiently. NCR was able to bring in a Teradata-based data warehouse and demonstrate its scalability in less than three months. Choosing a scalable solution that is Y2K-compliant will provide LEXIS-NEXIS with critical support for its data into the next century.
