Silicon Graphics and MicroStrategy Team to Provide Industry’s First Integrated Data Mining/OLAP Solution

DSS WORLD, WASHINGTON (Oct. 28, 1998) — Delivering the most comprehensive knowledge discovery solutions to enterprises worldwide, Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE:SGI) and MicroStrategy Incorporated (NASDAQ:MSTR) today announced that they will jointly develop and market the first integrated visual data mining/on-line analytical processing (OLAP) solution. The integration is designed to accelerate time to discovery, or insight, for knowledge workers in such data-intensive industries as government, financial services, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, retail and manufacturing.

"By joining with Silicon Graphics, we are combining two complementary technologies – data mining and OLAP – to create a best-of-breed analysis solution," said Sanju K. Bansal, chief operating officer of MicroStrategy Incorporated. "The solution will be invaluable for companies who need to supplement their enterprise reporting products with an advanced system for knowledge discovery."

Silicon Graphics will combine its powerful data mining and visualization software, MineSet™, with MicroStrategy’s robust product line, DSS Suite™. The resulting application will be an effective tool for detecting fraud, creating personalized customer loyalty programs, optimizing manufacturing processes and developing marketing campaigns. Insight gained from data mining applications can be verified with decision support tools; similarly, OLAP can help to identify better target areas for data mining. Already, several state governments are saving millions of dollars per year by using visual data mining and OLAP technologies together to recognize suspicious patterns in Medicaid claims, payment and history data.

"Customers are asking for integrated, easy-to-use solutions for predictive modeling, business simulation, analysis and reporting," said Ihab Abu-Hakima, vice president and general manager, Strategic Business Analysis Division, Silicon Graphics. "We’re pleased to work with MicroStrategy to offer the industry’s first integrated OLAP and visual data mining solution that will establish a new threshold in the quality and speed of strategic decision making and enable customers to gain an extreme competitive advantage."

Silicon Graphics® MineSet™ software, combined with Silicon Graphics’ high-performance Origin™ servers, is a scalable client/server data mining solution for extracting information from data warehouses and revealing hidden patterns through intuitive, interactive, 3D visualizations. The current offering of MineSet adds 64-bit support for large (more than 2GB) memory and unrivaled multi-processing performance. It also incorporates a new API plug-in architecture for third-party algorithms, clearing the way for the rapid integration of users’ preferred decision support tools into MineSet.

MicroStrategy’s decision support platform enables users to query and analyze the most detailed, transaction-level databases, turning data into business intelligence. In addition to supporting internal enterprise users, MicroStrategy’s products extend DSS beyond corporate boundaries to customers, partners and supply chain constituencies through a broad range of pull and push technology such as the Internet, e-mail, telephones, pagers and other wireless communications devices.
